Coached LMU from 1936-1940.

His 1937-38 Loyola University Basketball Team, the second under his tenure as Lions Coach, must rate as one of the finest in school history, having posted an 18-7 record with such greats as Phil Woolpert, Scotty McDonald, Pete Newell and Vide Kriste. In addition to winning the Southwestern AAU Basketball Tournament in El Paso, Texas that year, the Lions also gained prestige with a stunning 41-33 victory over USC Trojans, Jimmy Needles gained an excellent reputation as a coach before coming to Loyola University, having served as the Head Coach of the first United States Olympic Basketball Team, which won the Gold Medal at Berlin in 1936. He also had a successful coaching record at the University of San Francisco in the 1920's and 1930's. His four-year record as Lions Head Coach was 48-39.
