The 1971 men's crew team recorded the fastest time on the West Coast for that season with a time of 5:44 minutes over 2,000 meters in the South Lido Channel in Newport Harbor in April 1971, which still stands as a program and course record over 50 years later. The team recorded its best-ever Western Sprints (West Coast Championship) performance on the University of Washington's home course on Lake Washington, finishing second among American west coast crews. The Lions finished 10th in the Intercollegiate Rowing Regatta – IRA - (the equivalent of the Intercollegiate National Rowing Championships).
 
The Members of the 1971 Men's Crew Team are Jerry Amalfitano, Larry Conley, John Haluck, Mike Mazzei, Larry McCutheon, Steven Nowinski, Mike O'Donnell, Mel Otero, Tom Petrich, and Coach John Lind.
