LOS ANGELES - This past weekend the LMU Women's Rowing teams traveled to Mission Bay, CA for the 2023 San Diego Crew Classic. Teams from all over the country competed in the two-day regatta.
Day One: Saturday, Apr. 1
The Lions second Varsity 8 finished in 5
th place in the first heat of the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungess Trophy. The 2V boat finished with a time of 7:20.86 beating UC San Diego by seven seconds and advancing to Final 2 of Sunday's competition. The crew had a strong first race of the season and continued to push the margin over their competitors in UCSD all the way through the finish line.
The Varsity 8 raced in the prelim of the UCSD Health Cal Cup where they finished in a time of 7:20.51 for a 5
th place finish and advancing to the only Final for the event on Sunday.
The Varsity 4 had their debut race of the year in the Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup, Heat 2. The crew finished in a time of 8:34.62 which was also a 5
th place finish to the team and advancing to Final 2 for Sunday's competition.
All boats set a strong tone for the season on Saturday. The athletes came off the water proud of the race they put together, while also eager to make adjustments and set themselves up for a strong race Sunday in their finals.
Day Two: Sunday, Apr. 2
On day two of the SDCC, the Lions finished 5
th in the UCSD Health Cal Cup Final finishing with a time of 7:15.137. The crew raced the same competitors Saturday to Sunday and were able to close margins on the other teams and find more speed in the middle of the raced.
In the V4 Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup Final 2, LMU finished in second only trailing UC San Diego by 15.87 seconds. The Lions out rowed MIT and Santa Clara.
In the last race of the day, the Lions 2V8 boat raced in the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungess Trophy Final 2 and won first place outshining UC San Diego and MIT. The Lions finished with a time of 7:24.276 while UCSD finished with a time of 7:27.543 and MIT with 7:36.034.
"It was a great weekend to test our speed against conference and out of conference competitor's while learning how we race and respond to different racecourse scenarios, said Foster. "We are eager to keep working hard over the next two week as we gear up for our next race of the season."
The teams 2V8 was the boat of the race for the Lions after having a strong race Saturday in the heats and moving onto Sunday to win the final.
