Box Score March 10, 2017 Box Score
LMU broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the top of the eighth, but it was a 7.0 inning gem from senior Blake Redman that truly highlighted a 4-0 shutout victory for the Lions (7-7) over Cal Poly (3-10) on Friday night from Baggett Stadium.
Redman struck out a career-high 10 hitters while allowing just five hits and one walk over the 7.0 innings to record the victory and move to 1-3 on the season.
Sophomore Codie Paiva was the only reliever LMU needed to ensure the second shutout win of the year, tossing the final 2.0 innings and striking out four.
Right-hander Erich Uelmen was nearly as impressive for Cal Poly, dealing 7.0 innings and allowing just one unearned run on four hits with five strikeouts before being saddled with the loss and falling to 1-3 on the year. Uelmen escaped a pair of jams over his stint by way of the double play ball, inducing inning-ending double plays in the fourth and sixth innings. Cal Poly has now been shut out in each of Uelmen's last three starts.
Playing in a scoreless game in the eighth, LMU received a gift to lead off the frame, as Uelmen bobbled and then kicked a comebacker from Cooper Uhl to put the leadoff man aboard. Phil Caulfield, now facing reliever Kyle Smith, drew a walk before Nick Sogard sacrificed the runners to second and third. With the infield drawn in, Billy Wilson punched an RBI-single back up the middle that proved to be the game-winner. Although the one run would have been enough, LMU plated three more as Jamey Smart walked in front of a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to Niko Decolati to make it 2-0. Wasting no time, Brandon Shearer capped the scoring run on the ensuing play, dumping a two-RBI single just inside the foul line in left field to bring home Wilson and Smart.
Cal Poly managed to put runners at the corners with two out in the ninth inning, but Paiva got Kevin Morgan swinging to end the game and record the 14th strikeout of the night for LMU -- setting a new season high.
LMU will look to win the series on Saturday night when lefty Brenton Arriaga takes the mound against right-hander Spencer Howard at 6 p.m.
