Williams Homer Ties Game Late but Lions Fall to Toreros After Late Slam

SAN DIEGO — LMU got a game-tying two-run homerun from Zion Williams in the eighth inning, but the Toreros hit a grand slam in the bottom half of the inning as the Lions fell 7-3 to San Diego at Fowler Park on Friday night.

The Toreros drew first blood in the second inning when Connor Meidroth doubled down the right-field line to score both Greer and Diego Gonzalez for a 2-0 lead. Greer added to it in the seventh with a solo shot to deep right, his first home run of the season, to make it 3-1.

LMU answered in the sixth when DJ Ghiorso singled, stole second and scored on an RBI single to right-center by Andrew Mhoon, cutting the deficit to 2-1. The Lions then stormed back in the eighth. Ghiorso drew a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch before Zion Williams crushed a two-run homer down the left-field line, his fourth of the season, to tie the game at 3-3. The ball was hooking foul and careened off the foul pole to tie things up.

San Diego blew it open in the bottom of the eighth off reliever Alec Johnson. With the bases loaded, Greer launched a grand slam to center, his second homer of the night, for a 7-3 lead that proved insurmountable.

Adam Behrens went 6.1 innings for LMU, allowing three earned runs on four hits with six strikeouts before giving way to Johnson, who took the loss. Johnson finished 1.2 innings, surrendering four runs on three hits. LMU managed five hits, left six on base and went hitless with runners in scoring position after the sixth.

The Lions and Toreros will finish the season on Saturday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. (PT).
