LMU Drops Extra-Inning Battle in Season Finale at San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Loyola Marymount baseball closed out the 2025-26 season in dramatic fashion, battling into extra innings before falling 9-8 to San Diego in a 10-inning thriller at Fowler Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Lions (12-44, 3-24 WCC) showed resilience from start to finish, matching San Diego's momentum at every turn and even grabbing the lead in the 10th before the Toreros walked it off in the bottom half.

LMU set the tone early, as Zion Williams launched a solo home run in the opening inning, his fifth of the season, to give the Lions a quick 1-0 edge. San Diego responded with two runs in the third, but LMU wasted no time answering back. In the fourth, Zach Wadas sparked the offense with a double and later came home on a Noah Malone sacrifice fly to even the score. Moments later, Andrew Mhoon lifted a sac fly of his own, putting the Lions back in front, 3-2.

Jake Lyall added to the momentum in the fifth with a solo shot to center, extending the lead to 4-2. The Toreros responded once again, using a three-run inning to reclaim the advantage, but the Lions continued to fight. In the sixth, Wadas came through with a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 5-5.

San Diego answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, yet LMU refused to back down. Wadas delivered again in the eighth with an RBI triple to cut the deficit to one, and the Lions found the equalizer in the ninth when Malone came around to score on a wild pitch, tying the game at 7-7.

In the 10th, LMU seized the moment. A wild pitch brought home the go-ahead run, giving the Lions an 8-7 lead and putting them in position to close out the finale. But San Diego responded in the bottom half, capitalizing on an opportunity to tie the game before delivering a walk-off RBI single to secure the 9-8 result.

Avery Laine made his final start as a Lion, setting the tone early and working through 4.1 innings in a competitive outing.

At the plate, the Lions tallied 13 hits, with Wadas, Williams, Malone, Travis Friend, Cooper Whitton, and Lyall each recording multi-hit performances. Wadas led the way with a double, triple, and two RBI, while Williams added a home run and scored twice in the effort.

Out of the bullpen, Jacob Fried and Jake Geis combined to provide key innings as the Lions navigated a back-and-forth contest that featured multiple lead changes and momentum swings throughout.

Saturday's series finale closed the chapter on LMU's 2025-26 campaign, with the Lions battling until the final swing.
