Just Briefly

The Lions have struggled of late, now riding a three-game losing skid after falling last weekend to both Santa Clara and San Diego. All of LMU's conference losses have come on the road. Senior Stephanie Tobin scored the Lions' only goal of the weekend on Friday against the Broncos, her first career goal as a Lion.

Up Next

The Lions return home to continue West Coast Conference action at Sullivan Field this weekend. LMU is 5-1-1 at home this season and hoping that home field advantage will help it gain some ground in the WCC standings. The Lions host the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Friday, Oct. 24 at 3 p.m. and the Portland Pilots on Sunday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m.

A First For Tobin

Senior Stephanie Tobin collected her first collegiate goal last Friday night against the then-14th ranked Santa Clara Broncos. Tobin, who is in her fourth year with the Lions, has played in 14 games this season. The forward has also picked up two assists this year giving her a total of four points.

Lewandowski Leaps Up

Sophomore Kelly Lewandowski has jumped ahead of the pack. Lewandowski has scored four goals and one assist, for nine points this season. The four goals pushes her atop the team standings with senior Shari Nishikawa for the title of leading scorer.

Senior Leadership

Senior Shari Nishikawa continues to lead the Lions offensively with 10 points so far this season. The Hawaiian native is tied with Kelly Lewandowski for the squad lead in goals with four. Her 28 shots and 11 shots on goal are also tops among Lions. Nishikawa has also tallied three game-winning goals this year which not only leads the team, but ranks second in the WCC as well.

Yukihiro Stands Strong

Despite giving up six goals last weekend, junior goalkeeper Kelly Yukihiro stands strong. The only keeper to appear in net for the Lions so far this season has picked up seven shutouts on the season improving her career total to 12.5. She has made 55 saves to date and boasts a goals against average of 1.02, fifth best in the West Coast Conference.

Home Sweet Home

The Lions are hoping that getting back home will help snap them out of their funk. LMU has put together an impressive 5-1-1 record when playing on Sullivan Field this season. The Lions only loss at home this year came against Kansas. LMU's best ever home record came in 1998 when the Lions went 6-0-4 on Sullivan Field.

Nishikawa Cracks The Record Book

Junior Shari Nishikawa's continues to inch her way up the all-time charts at LMU. The assist she picked up against Stanford two weeks ago gives her a total of 10 career assists, which moves her up the top-10 all-time assist chart at LMU. Nishikawa is currently seventh on the career assists list tied with former Lion Myka Peck (1999-02). Nishikawa's team leading five assists last year was among the best in the WCC. She finished 2002 just four assists shy from claiming the top spot in the single-season record book. The current single-season record of eight was set by Cindy Carullo (1993-96) in 1993 and then matched by Jessica Lyon (1995-98) in 1997.

LMU Head Coach

Gregg Murphy is in his eighth year at the helm of the LMU women's soccer program. Under Murphy the Lions have enjoyed unprecedented success, posting winning seasons in all but two of his years in Westchester and making their first ever postseason appearance in 2002. Murphy's record at LMU now stands at 77-55-14, while his career coaching record, which spans 13 seasons, stands at 135-107-18. An outstanding recruiter, Murphy's 2003 class was ranked 10th best in the West Region and 39th nationally by SoccerBuzz magazine. Murphy is a 1986 graduate of Chapman University.

Recap at No.14 Santa Clara (Oct. 17)

The 20th-ranked Lions suffered a 4-1 loss to at Buck Shaw Stadium. Senior Stephanie Tobin scored her first collegiate goal against the Broncos. The Lions struck first in the 10th minute, when the Bronco defense miss-cleared a pass and was collected by Kylie Beren. Her shot was deflected by Stephanie Tobin into the far right corner for the early lead. That score ended a shut out streak from Bronco keeper Julie Ryder of 294:38 minutes, dating back to September 21 against Notre Dame. Santa Clara responded just five minutes later, when Micaela Esquivel's cross found Lauren Zealear in the box. The score remained 1-1 through halftime. The Broncos' offense kept up the flurry, scoring two goals in the first seven minutes of the second period. Kristi Candau and Tina Estrada netted goals just 65 seconds apart for SCU. Zealear assisted on Candau's score, centering a pass for the left-footed shot. Just one minute later, Estrada stole the ball in midfield and dribbled in for a strong attempt from outside the box that gave Santa Clara a 3-1 lead. The Broncos put the game away with yet another goal, making it a 4-1 contest. Santa Clara out shot LMU 16-5. Laura Trask led the Lions with three shots. Trask saw two of her shots hit the: 48 seconds into the match and again at the 77:16 mark.

Recap at San Diego (Oct. 19)

No. 20 LMU dropped a 2-0 loss to San Diego last Sunday afternoon at Torero Stadium. USD's Katie Allen scored in the 65th minute to give the Toreros a 1-0 lead. Colleen Fogarty would add another goal. A lead pass from San Diego junior Marie Claude-Henry allowed Allen to break a scoreless tie mid-way through the second half. Allen avoided a charging Kelly Yukihiro and found the net despite pressure from a pair of Lion defenders. A pass from San Diego's Brooke Roby created a collision in front of the goal between Fogarty and LMU keeper Yukihiro. As both players fell to the ground the ball tricked into the net giving USD a 2-0 lead. Both teams totaled seven shots on the afternoon and played a very even match through the first 45 minutes of play. Loyola Marymount (0-2 WCC) was inches away from scoring as the first half came to an end. On a bouncing ball that eluded USD goal keeper Libby Bassett and reached the goal line, an opportunistic Torero defender came up with a save to keep things scoreless at halftime. Alicia Lloyd, Lori Sims, and Kellie Schroeder each posted one shot on goal for the Lions. Yukihiro added three saves.
