MORGAN HILL, Calif. – LMU's Riley Lewis has advanced to the 2023 Division I Men's Golf Championships following his 3-hole playoff win on Wednesday. Lewis shot his best round of the tournament to move into a tie for second overall and force a winner-take-all playoff to advance out of the Morgan Hill Regionals. Lewis shot 71-72-69—212 over the three days to finish the tournament at 4-under and advanced through after the tiebreaker holes separated him as the top individual golfer not from an advancing team.
 
Lewis entered Wednesday's final round tied for sixth, but after five birdies and a three-under final 18, the LMU junior finished tied with NC State's Maximilian Steinlechner at 4-under par.
 
For the first time all tournament, Lewis bogied on the first hole of the day. A birdie on seven followed by another birdie on nine put him at 1-under for the day through the front nine. Coming out of the turn Lewis sunk another birdie on 11 to pull within striking distance of Steinlechner, who was just finishing his round.
 
A bogie on 14 pushed Lewis two back with four holes to play. After pars on 15 and 16, Lewis did exactly what was needed and hit back-to-back birdies to end his round and finish at 3-under, 69 for the day.
 
The two golfers returned to the course for the playoff holes. Each player recorded par on 18 then 10. On the return to 18, Lewis recorded a birdie to win the tiebreaker and punch his ticket into the NCAA Championships on May 26-31 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
 
Following single rounds of stroke play on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the field will be cut to the top 15 teams and top nine individuals on a non-advancing team. The final round of stroke play will be held on Monday, May 29, to determine an individual national champion and the final eight teams to advance to match play.
