FRESNO, Calif. – The LMU men's golf team put together an all-time tournament this week, breaking the school record for low score and earning an individual win in a playoff tiebreaker.
The Lions finished 11-under today, and a program-record 28-under for the tournament with a 284-275-277—836 three rounds. The previous LMU record for a three-round team score came in the Turtle Bay Invitational in November of 2007, with the Lions finishing at 23-under, 841.
Four LMU players scored in the top 15 of the field, highlighted by the first career win for senior
Gavin Cohen. Shooting a career-low, Cohen put together a 70-66-67—203 and capped off the tournament with a playoff win on 18 to break a share of the lead with BYU's Carson Lundell.
Cohen led the field with 20 birdies, which he fittingly recorded on the playoff hole as well. Cohen finished at 6-under on Par 4 holes, averaging 3.80 on such holes. Cohen was also 1-under overall on Par 3 holes and 6-under of Par 5 holes. Cohen did not shoot a single hole over par in his final round on Tuesday.
An LMU individual has recorded a first-place finish 26 times in program history. The last Lion to win a tournament was
Riley Elmes in 2017 and 2019.
Cohen's 203 is tied for the second-best individual performance in a tournament for the Lions. Cohen finished one-stroke off of the program record, which Elmes set in 2019 at the Arizona Intercollegiate.
Caden McMackin shot under par for the first time as a Lion, using his final round 5-under to shoot 75-69-67—211 and jump into a tie for 11
th.
Tying for 15
th overall were LMU's
Riley Lewis (71-69-73—213) and
Cameron Meeks (68-71-74—213).
Guy Clauss rounded out the LMU five with his 81-77-70—228.
As a team, the Lions finished three strokes off of BYU for the tournament title. LMU surpassed Saint Mary's on the final day and closed out with a four-stroke advantage over the Gaels.
LMU will next compete on Mar. 1-2 at the Sacramento State Invitational in Elk Grove, Calif.
