EUGENE, Ore. â€" Loyola Marymount's Riley Elmes and Oregon's Norman Xiong were in a back-and-forth race Tuesday to determine the individual winner of the Oregon Duck Invitational. As a team, the Lions finished in the top 10 with a 298-294-296-888.
Riley carried us on his back all week," said Head Coach Jason D'Amore. "He played terrific golf and has situated himself nicely going into conference and the postseason. Really impressed and proud of the player he's become."
Elmes (71-66-66-203) led after shooting a second round 66, and followed that with a second round of 66 in round three. On his home course, Xiong (67-71-64-202) shot 7-under to take the individual title by one stroke. Xiong finished the tournament at 11-under and Elmes at 10-under, with the next closer finisher finishing seven-strokes back at 3-under.
The junior finished with 11 birdies and an eagle, to go along with his 39 holes at par.
Along with Elmes, LMU's other Oregonian, Billy Pollock, finished second on the team after tying for 31st with his 72-77-73-222.
Nick Jan (78-75-80-233) tied for 71st, while Samuel Su (77-76-83-236) and Matthew Carungay (82-79-77-238) finished two strokes off one-another to close out the LMU five.
Oregon and Liberty tied for first in the team race, with LMU taking 10th of the 16 schools.
The Lions will have a quick turnaround before hosting a match against Brown on Wednesday at Brentwood Country Club.
