Lion Offense Rolls to Sweep

Box Score April 2, 2017

Box Score

Highlighted by a 4-for-4 day that included two doubles, a run scored and three RBI from senior Jimmy Hill, LMU's offense slugged its way to 15 runs on 17 hits as LMU (18-10, 7-2 WCC) won its seventh straight game, this time knocking off Pacific (11-15, 2-7 WCC) by a count of 15-6 on Sunday to record a sweep over the Tigers.

In addition to Hill, LMU received a 3-for-4 day from Phil Caulfield. The leadoff man managed a double, one run scored and two RBI. Brandon Shearer went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Steven Chavez batted 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a double and one RBI. Billy Wilson also notched a perfect day at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two walks, three runs scored and a triple â€" his second in as many days. After taking over for Nick Sogard, who went 1-for-2 with two runs scored, a double and three RBI, Kevin Jordan made the most of his one at bat, lacing his first career homer out to left centerfield in the eighth inning.

While the offense was busy scoring five in the third, two in the fourth, six in the sixth, and the two in the eighth, right-hander Cory Abbott was twirling another solid outing, finishing with 6.0 innings of work and allowing just one unearned run on three hits and three walks while striking out eight to record the win and move to 5-1.

On the other side, Pacific starter Ricky Reynoso was charged with the loss after allowing five runs on six hits and three walks over 2.2 innings of work.

The Pacific hitters did manage to get to reliever Ted Boeke, who surrendered five runs on four hits, including back-to-back homers to James Free and Ryan Schalch, over a third of a frame in the seventh. Braydon Salzman righted the ship out of the bullpen, turning in the next 1.2 innings before Codie Paiva closed out the ninth to seal the first LMU sweep of the year.

Schalch finished 2-for-5 with a run scored and the homer.

LMU will look to win its eighth straight on Tuesday when it hosts UC Riverside at 6 p.m.
