LOS ANGELES - Marcella Hughes, a 5-7 guard haling from Carondelet High School in Concord, has signed a National Letter of Intent to continue her education and basketball career at LMU, Head Coach Charity Elliott announced Monday.
Hughes is the sixth member of Elliott's 2015-16 recruiting class that also includes three additional true freshmen, one sophomore transfer and one senior transfer who will redshirt the 2015-16 season. Hughes will also reunite with current Lion Makenzie Cast, who also prepped at Carondelet HS.
"Marcella had a break out year this year for Carondelet and we are so happy that she's now officially joining the Lions," said Elliott."She's a tough competitor who can defend, shoot and handle the basketball. She's a tremendous compliment to the other players on this team and her toughness and work ethic are unmatched. We are so excited to see how she impacts this program and couldn't be happier that she's going to be wearing crimson and navy."
This past season, Hughes helped lead Carondelet to a perfect 14-0 East Bay Athletic League record and 26-4 overall mark. The Cougars finished as the runner-up in the North Coast Section Division II title game and advanced to the second round of the CIF State Division II Championships.
A team captain for her final prep season, Hughes averaged 13.2 points, 5.0 steals, 4.8 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game. She was named MVP at the Davis High School Dorothy Speck Memorial Tournament and West Coast Jamboree (Diamond Division) while also earning EBAL MVP and All-East Bay Second Team honors. Most recently, Hughes was named to the 20-member Cal-Hi Sports All-State Girls Basketball Division II Team.
