LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The LMU swimming team honored its seven senior student-athletes prior to Saturday's rainy double dual meet against CSU Bakersfield and UC San Diego. The Lions dropped both decisions, falling to UCSD, 185-108, and CSU Bakersfield, 158-134. The Tritons topped Bakersfield in both the women's and the men's competition, earning a 172-128 victory on the women's side before knocking off the Roadrunners, 160-139, on the men's side.
LMU's senior class consists of Diana Safa, Kathleen Gore, Hailey Chisholm, Isabel Casso, Kjirsten Magnuson, Lise Soule, Maddie Vanderpoel.
The Lions managed five first-place finishes, including a pair each from Magnuson and Hannah Calton. Magnuson, swimming in her final home meet of her career, took first in the 100 backstroke (57.68) and 50 freestyle (24.13). Calton, a sophomore, earned victories in both the 100 butterfly (57.48) and 200 butterfly (2:05.52). Junior Kristen Clarno earned LMU's final first-place finish, edging Maddy Huttner of UCSD with a mark of 2:08.14 in the 200 IM. Huttner touched the wall in 2:08.22.
In addition to her victory in the 200 IM, Clarno also took second place in her other two individual events. The Sunnyvale, Calif. native finished with a mark of 1:55.60 in the 200 freestyle before stopping the clock at 53.27 in the 100 freestyle. Magnuson, Mary Kate Reid, Kailee Mora and Gore combined to earn LMU's third and final second-place finish on the afternoon, placing second in the 200 medley relay with a mark of 1:47.96.
Stephanie Horwitz also had a stellar day for the Lions, claiming a pair of top-three finishes by way of third-place honors in the 1,000 freestyle (10:51.09) and the 500 freestyle (5:16.04). Calton added a third-place finish in the 100 freestyle (53.42) and swam the lead leg of LMU's third-place 400 freestyle relay to complete her stellar day at the pool. Calton was joined by Stacy Maier, Clarno and Kristen Brennand on that relay that stopped the clock at 3:34.69.
LMU will return to action on January 16 when it travels to the two-day Beach Cup to compete against San Diego, Fresno State and Pepperdine. This year's Beach Cup will be hosted by Fresno State.
