Tawni Martino Named WCC co-Player of the Week

Nov. 1, 2010

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - For the second time this season, LMU freshman Tawni Martino has been named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week, as she shares the honor for October 25-31, the conference office announced Monday. Martino was involved in both goals on Sunday in LMU's 2-0 upset win over #10 Santa Clara and is the first player in program history to earn two WCC Player of the Week honors in the same season. She shares this week's award with Jordan Marada of Saint Mary's.

Martino (Irvine, Calif.) broke the LMU single-season record with her fifth game-winning goal of the season to lift the Lions to their first win in Santa Clara since 2000 on Sunday. Martino was involved in both goals of the 2-0 win over the 10th-ranked Broncos, scoring the first in the 50th minute and then earning the penalty kick that put the game out of reach. It was LMU's first-ever win on the road at a top-10 opponent and the Lions' first win against a team in the top-10 since 2001.

Martino has scored in two of the last three games to sit atop the Lions' scoring list with eight goals, the third-most in a single-season in LMU history and the most since 2007. She is tied for the conference lead in goals and game-winning goals and is third in total points with 19.

LMU closes out its 2010 regular season at home on Friday against San Diego at 2:30 p.m.
