Tucson, AZ - The Loyola Marymount men's basketball team ended a grueling 8,804-mile road trip with just seven scholarship players with an 84-57 setback at the University of Arizona on Tuesday night at the McKale Center in Tucson, Ariz. The Lions actually led by as many as for in the first half and never gave up as the Wildcats depth and size was too much for the young Lions.
Freshman Jarred DuBois led the Lions once again with 16 points while LaRon Armstead and Corey Counts added 14 points. Armstead added eight rebounds while playing all 40 minutes. Fellow freshman Kevin Young had 11 boards with six points. Zane Johnson came off the bench to lead all scorers with 17 points.
"It's like walking through a mind field playing a team that his type of talen," said Acting Head Coach Max Good. "It was a close game and then we missed a dunk, a couple of lay-ups and missed a couple of opportunities in transition defense, and it turned into a double digit lead for them. Once that happened they relaxed and didn't miss."
After Arizona scored the first bucket of the game, Lions went on an 8-2 run to go up by four. They kept that lead for the first seven minutes. However, Young picked up his second foul and the Lions couldn't recover.
"We had two freshman in double digits and asked them to play a lot of minutes," said Good. Armstead played all 40 minutes for the Lions. "We are getting frustrated and we have to wipe this game off the books and get to work on finals and our next game."
Arizona finished the game hitting 46.9 percent (30-for-64), going 50 percent in the second half. They went 7-for-11 from long range in the second frame and finished 46.2 percent from three (12-for-26). The Lions went 33.3 percent from the field and 36.4 percent from the three-point line (8-for-22). They did go 9-for-11 from the charity stripe, hitting their last nine attempts.
