LAS VEGAS - LMU's WCC Tournament came to an end on Thursday night in the opening round with a 66-62 loss. The Lions nearly erased a 13-point second half deficit, pulling within one late in the game.
Rodney Brown Jr. and Myron Amey Jr. hit back-to-back jumpers to open the game and give LMU an early 4-0 lead. Brown's three at 16:57 was the largest lead of the game for the Lions, pushing the team up five points.
Rick Issanza converted a pair of dunks midway through the opening half, but San Diego's 53.8 percent (14-for-26) shooting over the first 20 minutes pushed the Toreros ahead by as many as 13. USD took a 42-31 lead into the half.
The Lions chipped away at the deficit throughout the second half to ultimately bring the score down to one on
Aaron McBride's third and-1 opportunity of the game with 2:54 on the clock. McBride scored 16 of the LMU's 31 points in the second half on his way to matching his career-high mark of 21 which he set a game prior against Seattle. McBride hit a second layup to pull back within one with 1:08 remaining. McBride went 7-for-9 from the free throw line, both career highs in makes and attempts.
Only three players scored in the second half for LMU, as the captains of Amey and
Jan Vide combined for the remaining 15 second half points. Amey hit a three with less than 10 seconds to play to make it a one-possession game before one more foul made it a four-point final. Amey scored 16 in his final college game and Vide scored 10 and sharing a game-high with five assists.
The Lions only hit four threes, tying a season-low, but did outscore San Diego 34-22 in points in the paint.
The season ends with LMU finishing with 15 wins.
