MALIBU, Calif. - It was another double overtime thriller for the LMU women's soccer team, but the extra time was not kind to the Lions, as Pepperdine scored a 3-2 come from behind victory in WCC action this afternoon in Malibu. The Lions took a 2-0 lead in the first half, but the Waves scored three unanswered goals for the win.
The Lions opened the scoring early in the first half. Lori Sims found Kelly Lewandowski on a breakaway to give LMU the 1-0 lead. The goal is Lewandowski's fourth of the season, and her second in as many games. She now has 17 career goals, and is just three goals behind the all-time record of 20. Sims' assist is her fourth of the season and the 14th in her career. It adds to her career point total, and she is now just one point away from tying the all-time points leader Heather Farr. Farr had 51 points (20 goals, 11 assists) in her LMU career, and Sims now has 50 points (18 goals, 14 assists).
Jessica Johns gave the Lions a 2-0 lead in the 25th minute. After a long throw-in, Tana Smothermon headed the ball down to Johns who took a shot from 10 yards out to make it a 2-0 game.
But the Waves battled back, making it a 2-1 game in the 31st minute. The Lions outshot Pepperdine, 9-5, in the first half, and had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. But LMU's offense struggled in the second half, managing just one shot in the period, and just two shots in the final 58 minutes of play.
Pepperdine's Lindsey Redlin tied the game in the 56th minute, taking advantage of a scramble in front of the net. After a scoreless first overtime period, the Waves scored the game winner at 113:00. Megan Woods passed the ball through to Jenna Fodor, who one-timed the ball past LMU goalkeeper Joslyn Slovek to help the Waves to the win.
Sims and Redlin led all players with five shots in the game. Slovek and Pepperdine goalkeeper Anna Picarelli each made three savesin the game. Pepperdine held a slight 12-11 advantage in shots, and a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks.
The game marks LMU's sixth double overtime contest this season, and their seventh game with extra time. After opening the season with six straight overtime games, the Lions haven't played an overtime contest in their last six games. The Lions will look to bounce back from the loss when they host Portland at Sullivan Field on Friday at 4:00pm.
