Recap |  Box Score |  Quotes

GAME NOTES:

  • The Lions last overtime came in Denver on Dec. 16, 2003. The Lions won in double overtime 84-82.
  • The Lions were the first sell-out crowd for 25th-ranked Virginia on the season. Virginia had already defeated 14th-ranked Arizona at home. That game drew 7,700 compared to Thursday's 8,392.
  • The game against Virginia was the 39th consecutive game the Lions have played with a winning record (.500 or better). LMU never fell under .500 in the 2003-04 campaign in which they posted a 15-14 overall record. This season the Lions are 7-2 after starting the year 2-0. The 39-game streak is the second best in program history, trailing a 52-game stretch from Dec. 30, 1960 through Dec. 26, 1962. The streak started in the 1960-61 season, the first WCC Championship campaign in LMU history. The Lions started the streak when they were 4-4 on the season and finished 20-7 overall. In 1961-62 the Lions went 18-9 and were above .500 the entire campaign. The 1962-63 saw the Lions begin 3-1 before dropping three straight to fall below .500 for the first time in three seasons.
  • The last time the Lions defeated a ranked opponent in regular season play came in a 121-116 victory at 17th-ranked La Salle on Jan. 6, 1990. At the end of the season the Lions won three straight in the NCAA tournament against ranked opponents, including the last victory against a ranked team, 23rd-ranked Alabama, 62-60, on March 23, 1990.
  • The game against 25th ranked Virginia is the second ranked opponent on the season for the Lions, as LMU hosted 16th-ranked Washington on Dec. 12. LMU has not played two different ranked opponents in one season since the 1992-93 and 1993-94 seasons. In 1992, the Lions played 23rd-ranked UNLV on Dec. 5 and then 24th-ranked Michigan State on Dec. 12. The following year LMU traveled to 13th-ranked UCLA on Nov. 27 to open the season and 24th-ranked Wisconsin came to Gersten Pavilion on Dec. 4.
  • The game against Virginia is the first time since Nov. 25, 2000 the Lions played a non-conference ranked opponent on the road. LMU played 20th-ranked USC the last time.
  • The Lions out-rebounded Virginia by 10, 44-34. It is the third straight game the Lions have out-boarded an opponent by at least 10. LMU had 14 offensive rebounds against the Cavaliers, giving they 54 in the last three games.
  • LMU hit more than 83 percent from the free throw line for the sixth straight game.
