Box Score

Los Angeles, Calif., - Friday, Oct. 24, 2003 - The Loyola Marymount University women's soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision to Gonzaga at Sullivan Field on Friday afternoon. It is the first time in program history that the Lions have fallen to the Bulldogs. Sophomore Kellie Schroeder and freshman Tana Smothermon led the way with five shots each for LMU.

The Lions drop to 7-6-3 overall and 0-4-0 in West Coast Conference action while the Bulldogs move to 9-7-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the WCC with the win.

LMU dominated the tempo offensively from start to finish outshooting Gonzaga 26-6 for the game. Unfortunately for the Lions they could not find the back of the net. LMU had plenty of chances to score, the first coming early in the first half when Schroeder saw her first shot of the day hit the crossbar, just inches shy putting the Lions on the board.

Gonzaga took the lead when Sarah Hawkins scored her first goal of the game off an assist from Walker Loseno. Loseno attempted a shot from a corner kick which bounced around in front of LMU's goal and was tapped in by Hawkins. Annie Hawkins gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead at the half with her breakaway goal in the 41st-minute.

The Lions came out firing again in the second half outshooting the Bulldogs 18-3 in the final 45 minutes of regulation. Luck was not on LMU's side as none of its nine shots on goal could get past GU goalkeeper Ashley Haugen. Haugen was peppered with Lion shots all game having to make nine saves in the contest.

Lion sophomore Kelly Lewandowski nearly had her fifth goal of the year only to see it called back by an offsides call from the linesman. Smothermon put four of her five shots on goal for LMU. Sophomore Lori Sims followed with four shots while senior Laura Trask had three on the day.

Sarah Hawkins adn Katie O'Brien would each score in the second half clinching the Bulldogs 4-0 win.

The Lions continue WCC action at home on Sunday, Oct. 26. LMU hosts the No.2 Portland at 1 p.m. on Sullivan Field.
