Los Angeles, CA (Dec. 17) - Sophomore Charles Brown continues to show his floor leadership in just his second season as he was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week on Monday Dec. 16 for his performance in Loyola Marymount's win over Long Beach State.
Brown becomes the second Lion this season to earn the WCC Player of the Week honor. Freshman Brandon Worthy won the honor in the first week of the season for his 24-point performance in the win over Loyola Chicago. It is the first time in five seasons the Lions have had two individuals earn Player of the Week honors by the conference.
The 5-11 point guard from Hercules, Calif., led the Lions to a 4-0 record at Gersten Pavilion to start the 2002-03 season. It is the first time the Lions have started 4-0 since the 1987-88 season when LMU went a perfect 14-0 at home.
Brown led the Lions with 16 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and three steals to post the 76-68 win over the 49ers on Dec. 14. He set a career-high in points, assists and rebounds in a career-high 34 minutes.
He finished 5-for-12 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line, all coming in the final two minutes to seal the victory. Brown's three-pointer with 4:58 remaining stretched the Lions lead to 11 and his assist with 2:58 remaining gave the Lions a seven-point lead to keep the game out of reach.
Brown is one of just two players in the West Coast Conference to lead their team in rebounding and assists.
