The University of San Diego Toreros defeated the Loyola Marymount Lions today in West Coast Conference action by the score of 11-1.
With the win, USD swept the weekend series and improved to 30-14 overall and 15-6 in the WCC.
USD stays three games back of Pepperdine (18-3) in the WCC's West Division as the Waves scored 4 runs in the bottom of the ninth today to defeat San Francisco, 11-10.
USD plays a critical three-game series at Pepperdine this weekend (April 28th, DH at 12 noon; April 29th, 1 pm). The LMU Lions fall to 15-32 overall and 4-17 in the WCC.
The Toreros broke open a close game with a 6-run sixth inning to run away with the game.
LMU got on the scoreboard first in the 2nd inning when David Maffei led off with a homer to left field off of Torero starter Bryan Bealer.
San Diego answered in the bottom of the second when Joey Prast opened with a double, moved to third on Mike Oseguera's single, then scored as Mike McCoy reached first on an infield error.
USD went up 2-1 in the 5th when Chris Sandor walked with two outs.? He came all the way around on Tom Caple's double to left center.
USD broke open the game in the sixth with six runs.
Prast and Oseguera opened the inning with back-to-back singles, then scored on Mike McCoy's double. USD added four more runs with Jason Marian's two-out double closing out the fireworks.
LMU's Vincent Cordova pitched 5.1 innings, giving up 8 hits and 6 runs to fall to 2-3. USD's Greg Simonetti (3-0) relieved Bealer in the 4th with two outs and a runner on third.
He got Mario Cordero to fly out to left to end the inning. Simonetti closed out the final four innings, giving up just one hit in the 9th -- a single to Joshua Whitesell.
Prast and Oseguera paced USD with three hits each. USD senior shortstop Josh Harris led off the bottom of the first with a single up the middle to extend his hitting streak to 21 games. He finished the day 2-for-4 at the plate with 1 run. Chris Sandor, Prast and Mike McCoy each scored 2 runs for the Toreros.
LMU's David Maffei was the lone Lion to get more than one hit -- he finished the day 2-for-3 with 1 run scored and 1 RBI.
The Lions will take on USC at Page Stadium on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
