LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Feb. 23, 2001) - The Loyola Marymount University baseball team was victim to a five-run fifth inning by UC Santa Barbara, as the Gauchos defeated the Lions 10-4 in Los Angeles on Friday afternoon.
The Gauchos (5-4) finished with 16 hits on the afternoon, three of them for homeruns. Tyler Von Schell's three-run homer in the first inning broke open the game for the Gauchos, as the Lions (9-6) were not able to get on track finishing with seven hits, two coming in the final inning.
UCSB's starter Rylie Ogle, who improves to 2-1 on the season, was solid, going eight innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits and striking out five. Lions starter C.J. Wilson fell to 0-3 on the season, giving up seven runs, six earned, in five innings.
LMU scored a run in the third inning when Robert Hirsh's double scored Brian Barton who reached on a single. The run cut the Gaucho lead to 5-1, but UCSB added two more in the fifth with a two-run homer by Jed Stringam that scored Jeff Bannon. Bannon, who reached on a double, finished the game 3-for-5 with two runs scored.
The Lions would answer in the bottom of the inning with an unearned run scored by Brian Barton, who reached on an error.
UCSB would get the run back in the top of the sixth with a solo homerun by Chad Peske. The Gauchos would add a pair in the seventh for their final scoring.
The Lions final two runs came in the ninth inning. Kayzell Milton hit a sacrifice fly that scored David Maffei and Marion Mauch's single scored Brady Koch.
Both teams will play against each other in doubleheader on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Page Stadium. The game was originally scheduled as a single game but was switched to a doubleheader to accommodate Sunday's game, which was moved for the fear of rain.
