QUICKLY
The Lions earned a 86-77 win in an exhibition game over Team Concept in their first game under the guidance of head coach Steve Aggers. The Lions will conclude their exhibition portion of their 2000-2001 schedule with a home match against Son's Blue Angels on Nov. 11 at 2 p.m.
SERIES
This will be the second meeting between the Lions and Son's Blue Angels. In LMU's 1999 exhibition contest, the Lions defeated the Blue Angels 83-73. Center Pablo Machado had 18 points and 20 rebounds and forward Elton Mashack had 15 points and eight rebounds. The two seniors are the only two players on the Lions' squad that had playing experience with LMU in 1999-2000.
LAST WEEK
The Lions opened up the Steve Aggers' era of Loyola Marymount men's basketball with a 86-77 win over Team Concept out of Vancouver, Washington. The Lions were led by senior Elton Mashack with 24 points and eight rebounds and junior Philipp Czernin with 21 points and seven rebounds. Czernin, who was a redshirt last year after transferring from Hawaii, and Mashack both finished the game shooting seven-of-seven from the free throw line. As a team, the Lions, who finished 1999-2000 shooting 67 percent from the free throw line, finished the game hitting 28 of 35 from the charity stripe (80%), including 13 of 14 (93%) in the second half. On the boards, the Lions were led by senior Pablo Machado with 10 and junior Greg Lakey with nine. The Lions were out rebounded by one at half time but finished with a +11 edge on the boards to finish the game (46-35). Team Concept was led by Todd Lautenbach with 18 and LMU graduate Greg Walker with 17.
COMPARISONS
Looking to compare the Lions exhibition openers from the past two seasons? There are some differences to take note...In 1999 against High Five America the Lions shot 59 percent from the free throw line, including a mere 50 percent in the second half. Saturday against Team Concept the Lions finished the game shooting 80 percent (28-35) and 93 percent in the second half (13-14). Also against Team Concept, the Lions held them to 40 percent from the field and 38 percent in the second half, compared to High Five's 43 percent in 1999. A year ago the Lions committed 32 turnovers compared to 20 for High Five. Against Team Concept, the Lions had 24 turnovers and forced 21 for their opponent.
COACHES' COMMENTS
On the win... "We broke the losing streak, and that is very important for this young team. A win is a win. We played a team with good NCAA Division I players. We played very hard, and it is important for us to get our confidence back."
On the Exhibition... "We went through some early season inconsistencies that are to be expected in exhibition play. We played in spurts, but I think we learned a lot tonight. It is important that every time we step on to the floor it is a learning environment for our team. Every week we will continue to grow and improve."
Rebounding... "We rebounded poorly in the first half. We were out rebounded by one in the first half. They responded very well in the second half and we finished with an advantage of 11 in rebounds."
On Shooting... "We did not shoot the ball very well at all. The free throw shooting was much improved the second half."
Hard Court Notes
ON THE COURT AGAIN
Juniors Philipp Czernin and Greg Lakey were glad to be back on the hardwood in the Lions' exhibition opener against Team Concept. Czernin and Lakey both redshirted the 1999-2000 season following their transfers from the University of Hawaii and USC, respectively. Czernin responded to playing in his first game since March of 1999 with 21 points and seven rebounds. The forward finished the game shooting 7-of-14 from the field and a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line. Lakey did his damage on the boards, finishing the game with nine rebounds to go with nine points. Czernin, a hometown product of Pacific Palisades High School, averaged 5.9 points in his freshman campaign at Hawaii. Lakey, in two seasons with the Trojans, finished with an average of 5.1 points per game and 3.4 rebounds.
WELCOME BACK
Loyola Marymount welcomed back the services of junior Robert Davis. The 6-2 guard from Tempe, Arizona, began his collegiate career at LMU in 1998-99 where he averaged 7.1 points and 2.3 rebounds a game as a true freshman. Last year Davis transferred to Chandler Gilbert Junior College where he led the conference with 26.2 points per game. In his first game back, Davis managed two points and three assists, while playing improved defense that earned him a team high 28 minutes in the Lions' opener against Team Concept.
SENIOR LEADER
As one of only two seniors, forward Elton Mashack will be asked to finish a four-year career at LMU this season as its leader. In the team's opener, he scored 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds, including a 7-of-7 effort from the free throw line. He could also become one of LMU's all-time leaders in the process. With 811 points and 375 rebounds in three years at Loyola Marymount, Mashack could join an elite list of only 10 players that have accomplished the feat of scoring 1,000 points and grabbing 500 rebounds in a career. In 1999-2000, Mashack finished with a roller coaster year, but managed 307 points (11.4 ppg) and 191 rebounds (7.1 rpg).

MORE THAN EXHIBITION
Senior center Pablo Machado enters his fourth and final season of collegiate basketball. Prior to transferring from Georgia Tech two years ago to LMU, Machado was one of the top-rated high school players in the nation coming out of Tift County High School in 1996. At 6-10, Machado was named Mr. Basketball in Georgia by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Hoping to return to his high school stats, where he averaged 22 points and 12 rebounds, Machado went through a transition year in the WCC finishing 23rd in the league with 9.7 points per game. However, Machado has gotten off to fast starts in the Lions' three exhibition games of his career. In the win against Team Concept, Machado scored six points and grabbed 10 rebounds in 19 minutes. In 1999-2000, Machado scored 26 and 18 against Son's Blue Angels and High Five America, respectively. He also commanded attention under the boards, grabbing 20 and 10. Aggers and his coaching staff hope that Machado will return to his exhibition ways throughout the regular season.
A GOOD WALK
Juniors Tyler McClenahan and Sean Mollins, two non-scholarship players for the Lions, played valuable minutes for the Lions in their opener. Playing the point position and providing needed depth at the position, McClenahan finished the game playing 12 minutes, scoring four points and adding two assists. Mollins, playing at the forward position, played eight minutes scoring as many points as fouls, five. He finished the game three-of-four from the charity stripe. McClenahan is from San Jose, Calif., and transferred from Foothill College and Mollins, from Redondo Beach, Calif., transferred from De Anza College.
JUCO TRANSFER
Point guard Eurskine Robinson transfered to Loyola Marymount from College of the Canyons. The junior set College of the Canyon's all-time assists mark with 421 in his two-year career. He had the third highest total in his second season with 8. 2 per game (230 total). In his first game as a Lion, Robinson finished with five assists and only one turnover against Team Concept. He added 13 points and three rebounds in the win.
PREPARATION
The Lions finish their exhibition play against Son's Blue Angels before beginning the 2000-2001 regular season against Vanguard University on Friday, November 17 at 7:05 p.m. The Lions are 43-30 in season openers.
