Sherilyn Frazier, Academic Coordinator, Student-Athlete Services. "Her drive and dedication to her craft, in addition to serving others, is impeccable.  I am ecstatic for Ma'at, all of her years of hard work rewarded. Congratulations toÂ
Ma'at Hembrick for being the 2019 recipient of the Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholars for Women's Rowing."
Â
Inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe, Jr.'s commitment to education and excellence on the tennis court, the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars exhibit academic excellence and community activism as well as athletic ability. To be included, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher, be at least a sophomore academically and be active on their campuses or in their communities.Â
Â
"I am thrilled to see Ma'at receive this award," exclaimed CoachÂ
Hanna Luft. "Ma'at exemplifies what it means to be a student-athlete-- excelling on the water, in the classroom and serving her community around her. She is involved in more than most Division I athletics as she is a teaching assistant, conducts research and invests time into serving others all on top of her rigorous practice schedule and staying on the Dean's List one semester after another. As her coach, I get to see Ma'at at practice every day with a smile, often providing comic relief for her teammates and consistently working to push herself and teammates to be stronger and faster. It is an honor to coach a young woman with such ambition."
Â
Hembrick is a senior from Carson, California and is a health and human science major with a biochemistry/Spanish minor while maintaining a GPA of 3.89.
