Following stellar freshmen campaigns in 2018, LMU sophomores
Veronica Miroshnichenko and
Eva Marie Voracek are preparing to play in top-level fall tournaments in the next month. Miroshnichenko has been selected to play singles at both the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships and the Oracle ITA Masters, while the pair will compete in doubles at the All-American Championships. Voracek has also been named to the prequalifying singles alternate list at that same tournament.
Pre-qualifying matches for the 34
th annual Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, featuring the nation's top Division I players, begin on Sept. 29 and will be played at Pepperdine University. Qualifying and main draw matches will be held at Riviera Tennis Club. Qualifying singles and doubles are set for Oct. 2-3, and the main draw will run Oct. 4-7.
In addition to vying for the All-American national title, players will be competing to secure a berth into the 2018 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships on Nov. 7-11 in Surprise, Ariz. Singles quarterfinalists, consolation singles champion and finalist, along with doubles semifinalists and consolation doubles champion and finalist advance to the end of fall national championship.
Miroshnichenko is one of 30 women's players selected to compete in the singles field at the Oracle ITA Masters. The event is scheduled to take place Sept. 20-23 in Malibu, Calif., at the Malibu Racquet Club and Pepperdine University.
Entering its fourth year of existence, the 2018 Oracle ITA Masters will again feature 32-player singles competitors per gender. Invitations were sent out to one man and one woman from each Division I Conference to participate, with criteria similar to the NCAA Tournament being used. Oracle and Pepperdine University will be announcing their wild card selections at a later date to round out the fields.
Similar to the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, the Oracle ITA Masters men's and women's singles champions earn automatic entry into the 2018 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships from Nov. 7-11 in Surprise, Ariz. A 32-team mixed doubles event will also take place at the 2018 Oracle ITA Masters, with players from the same conference partnered up wherever possible.
The ITA and Oracle recently announced that the men's and women's singles finals of the 2018 Oracle ITA Masters on September 23, 2018, from the Malibu Racquet Club, will be available to a national audience LIVE via ESPN3 and on the ESPN app, and later aired on ESPNU Monday September 24th at 5:00 p.m. EST/2:00 p.m. PST and Tuesday September 25th at 5:00 p.m. EST/2:00 p.m. PST. The women's singles final will kick off the live streaming coverage at 11:30 a.m. PDT / 2:30 p.m. PDT, with the men's singles championship slated for an approximate 2 p.m. PDT / 5 p.m. EDT, start. The Lions finished 2017-18 with a 17-6 overall record and a 7-2 mark in the WCC to earn a share of second place in the WCC standings. The second-place finish in the WCC is the best since LMU placed second in 2006, while the 17 wins are the most since going 22-10 in 1995. The Lions also went a perfect 10-0 from the LMU Tennis Center this year. Playing as the third seed in the WCC Championship Tournament, LMU advanced to the WCC Championship Match, eventually dropping the decision to top-seed Pepperdine.
Miroshnichenko reached the Round of 16 at the 2018 NCAA Division I Championship in May, becoming the first-ever Division I All-American in LMU women's tennis history. The native of Moscow, Russia finished her freshman year with a 24-10 overall singles mark. In addition to her All-American tag, she also took home West Coast Conference Co-Freshman of the Year and earned a spot on the All-WCC first team as a singles player.
Similarly, Miroshnichenko/Voracek advanced to the Round of 16 at the Division I Championships, eventually finishing the 2018 season with a 23-8 doubles record. The duo was named first team All-WCC at the conclusion of the regular season.
Proving herself individually in singles, Voracek compiled a 20-7 overall singles record and a 5-0 mark in WCC play while competing at #2 in the order. Voracek managed a 13-3 record in dual matches this year en route to earning a spot on the All-WCC second team.
