LMU Closes Season with Semifinal Appearance

FAIRFIELD, Calif. - The LMU women's tennis team saw its season come to a close on Friday afternoon, falling to No. 1 seed Pepperdine, 4-0, in the semifinals of the West Coast Conference Women's Tennis Tournament at the Green Valley Country Club. With the result, the Lions finish the year with a 12-10 overall record.

Pepperdine claimed the early momentum in doubles, earning wins on courts one and two to secure the opening point. The Waves took court one with a 6-0 decision before following with a 6-2 victory on court two to take a 1-0 lead. The match on court three went unfinished with LMU holding a narrow edge.

That momentum carried into singles play, where Pepperdine struck first on court three. Sonja Zhiyenbayeva secured a 7-5, 6-1 win over Kim-Michaela Zahraj to extend the Waves' lead.

The Waves followed with back-to-back wins to clinch the match. Chantal Sauvant earned a 6-4, 6-1 victory at the No. 4 position, before Duru Soke closed things out with a 6-2, 6-4 win on court five.

Several matches remained competitive but unfinished at the time of the clinch. Lidia Gonzalez battled on court one after dropping a tight opening set, while Ada Piestrzynska pushed her match into a third set on court two. Camilia Samel-Druz was also in the middle of a competitive match at No. 6 when play was halted.

Despite the result, the Lions conclude the 2026 season with a strong overall campaign, highlighted by key conference wins and a semifinal appearance in the WCC Tournament.
