LMU Finishes Second at WCC Championship

May 12, 2018

Competing at the 2018 WCC Championship from Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif., LMU rowing took home second place behind Gonzaga. The Bulldogs won their fourth straight WCC Rowing Championship by winning all three official races. LMU followed in second in each of the races.

Gonzaga's three wins allowed the Bulldogs to claim the maximum 42 points on Saturday. The title is the 17th in program history for the Bulldogs since the event's 1997 debut.

Gonzaga started the day with a win in the I Four at 7:41.21, followed by LMU at 7:50.50, before also claiming a win in II Eight at 6:57.08 -- in front of LMU at 7:05.90. The Zags saved the best for last, cruising to a convincing win in the I Eight with a time of 6:39.53, followed by LMU at 6:44.09. This marks the eighth time the Bulldogs have swept all three events.

Although the result would not count toward the official scoring, LMU's II Four won a three-team race over Gonzaga and Portland with a time of 7:45.45.

LMU's runner-up finishes helped the Lions (36 points) to post its best day at the championship since 2007. The Lions were runner-ups to the Bulldogs in 2007 after winning the 2006 title.

San Diego posted a third-place showing with 29 points, while Portland was fourth with 23 points.

LMU's Esther Broddin was crowned Co-WCC Newcomer of the Year, sharing the honor with Gonzaga's Lauren McCallum. Gonzaga swept the other All-WCC major awards, as Isabelle Belzil earned WCC Rower of the Year honors, Alexa Jadalla was WCC Coxswain of the Year, and Glenn Putyrae collected his ninth WCC Coach of the Year accolade.

At the conclusion of the racing, Broddin, Ellie Peebles and Ellery Martin were named to the 2018 All-West Coast Conference Women's Rowing Team.
