LMU Drops Series at Pacific

Playing a deciding game of a three-game West Coast Conference series on Saturday afternoon, Pacific (10-16, 3-6 WCC) scored seven runs over the first four innings and held on to beat LMU (13-14, 6-3 WCC) by a score of 7-5 to earn a series win.

THE DECISIONS: Freshman Nick Frasso got the start for LMU, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits and a walk while working the first 2.0 innings for the Lions in a losing effort. The decision dropped Frasso to 3-3 on the year. Cooper Casad dealt the first 5.0+ innings for Pacific, allowing four runs (two earned) on nine hits with five strikeouts to improve to 2-2 on the season. Justin Giovannoni was strong in finishing the game for the Tigers, throwing the final 4.0 innings and allowing just a solo homer to Niko Decolati in the ninth en route to capturing his second save of the year.

OFFENSIVE LIONS OF THE GAME: Nick Sogard, Decolati, Jamey Smart and Cooper Uhl each finished with two hits as LMU managed 12 in the game. Decolati, Smart and Uhl all scored one run, while Uhl joined Decolati with one RBI. Billy Wilson, Brandon Shearer and Dylan Hirsch also posted one RBI.

EARLY RUNS FOR TIGERS: Pacific scored twice in the second, four times in the third, and once in the fourth to collect all the runs it would need in the victory. A wild pitch allowed the first run to score in the second before Keaton Glover contributed a squeeze bunt for the second run. An RBI-single from Halstead and the second squeeze bunt from Glover highlighted the four-run third, while Lucas Halstead drove in an unearned run in the fourth after an error charged to Sogard at second base allowed Nate Verlin to reach and eventually come around.

BOX SCORE NOTES: Halstead went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI for Pacific ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬¦ Tyler Ryan also had three hits, a run scored and one RBI, including collecting a double ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃÆ'¢'¬" the only extra-base hit of Pacific's 11 hits in the game ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬¦ LMU posted four extra-base hits, including Decolati's homer, and doubles from Smart, Trevin Esquerra and Ryan Ruley ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬¦ LMU used six pitchers in the loss ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬¦ senior Tyler Cohen impressed out of the bullpen, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings and striking out two.

LION NOTES: LMU began the year 3-10 for the first time since 2010 ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬¦ that 2010 team went on to win five straight and 10 of the next 11 ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬¦ the Lions are now 10-4 since the 3-10 start this year, including winning seven straight to start the string, but have dropped two of the last three ÃÆ'¢Ã¢'¬¦ the series win for Pacific was the first-ever against LMU (LMU is now 7-1 in series against the Tigers).

ON DECK: LMU will return to action on Tuesday when it hosts UCLA at 6 p.m. from Page Stadium. The Lions will then travel to San Diego for a three-game West Coast Conference series next weekend.
