Aug. 30, 2017 The Lions are finally at home! After opening the season on the road at Seattle University and University of Washington, the Lions (0-2-0) will play on their home pitch for the first time this season. Sullivan Field will host four games in three days. The men take on UNC Asheville Friday followed by Penn State on Sunday, both days are double headers with women's soccer playing prior to the men. Being at home gives the Lions a welcomed advantage with Sullivan field being a historical difficult place to play for visiting teams.
"Obviously, we need to improve our play and hope to do that this weekend in the friendly (for us) confines of Sullivan Field," says Krumpe. "It will be a busy weekend with 4 games on Sullivan as the LMU women play two at home as well".
On the road, the Lions face two strong teams, and although they played both tough, the Lions ended with a pair of setbacks.
"We ran in to two very good teams last weekend who beat us in Seattle University and University of Washington," head coach Paul Krumpe states. "I was pleased that we played a much better brand of soccer from Friday to Sunday, but still could not find the back of the net."
Friday the Lions will face the Big South's UNC Asheville (0-1-0). Heading into this weekend the Bulldogs are looking for their first win as well. After spending 16 years with the Lions, UNC Asheville head coach Mathes Mennell, will return to Sullivan Field for the first time since starting with the Bulldogs in January 2015.
"Friday night will be the return to LMU of my longtime assistant Mathes Mennell, as he brings his UNC Asheville Bulldogs across the country" Krumpe said. "He has done a fantastic job taking over the reins of this program for the past two seasons and I know this may be the longest road trip this program has ever taken. We also had the chance to meet up with them while both LMU and UNCA were in Costa Rica this spring."
Sunday night the Lions are back at it taking on Penn State (0-1-0). As head coach Paul Krumpe says, this will be a big game to close out the weekend.
"I appreciate the fact that this very good program also returns our game from a few years ago" Krumpe states. "It is not always that a Big 10 school will travel this far to play games. Bob Warming also brought his Creighton teams to LMU when he was there and again, I appreciate him coming back with Penn State."
"We know we have our hands full with both teams and hope we can continue to improve every time we step on the field" says head coach Paul Krumpe.
LMU and Sullivan Field will be packed this weekend, with both the Men and Women having double header days Friday and Sunday. The Men's first match will be at 7pm Friday against UNC Asheville and they will close the weekend with Penn State Sunday at 4pm.
