LOS ANGELES – Sullivan Field witnessed history Thursday night as LMU men's soccer erupted for a program-record nine goals in a 9-2 demolition of Cal State Fullerton. The Lions improved to 3-2-1 with the unforgettable offensive showcase, highlighted by a hat trick from
Diego Lopez-Rosales and a new single-game scoring record.
LMU came out firing. Anthony Boyadjian struck first from the penalty spot in the 6th minute before Lopez-Rosales doubled the lead with a composed penalty of his own in the 15th. Moments later, the Lions pieced together a slick buildup that ended with Lopez-Rosales volleying into the right side of goal for his second, a finish that electrified the Sullivan Field crowd. Boyadjian then added his second in the 27th minute, spinning quickly inside the box and firing a shot that deflected off a Titan defender before falling into the back of the net.
After a pair of Titan goals brought the scoreline closer, the Lions stormed away in the second half. Lewis Clutton bagged a brace with goals in the 58th and 69th minutes, while Lopez-Rosales capped his hat trick in the 74th with a composed strike into the right corner. Ismael Mane (85') and Jaxson Hutcheon (89') added exclamation points, sealing LMU's night for the record books.
Goalkeeper Philip Hovers anchored the backline with two saves, and LMU outshot Fullerton 23-9, controlling the match with relentless pace and precision.
The Lions' nine-goal outburst set a new school record for most goals in a single match, eclipsing all previous marks in program history.
The Lions return to Sullivan Field on Monday, September 15 to take on Utah Tech. First kick is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. (PT).
