After having an eight-game win streak snapped on Friday night, LMU (20-11, 8-3 WCC) quickly got back in the win column on Saturday, as left-hander Brenton Arriaga dealt 7.0 strong innings and the Lion bats, led by junior Jamey Smart, plated six runs on 12 hits to record a 6-3 win over Santa Clara (7-23, 3-5 WCC) from LMU's Page Stadium.
Arriaga allowed just two runs (one earned) on four hits with no walks while striking out six to pick up the win and move to 4-0 on the year. The native of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. hurled 86 pitches and lowered his ERA to 2.45 for the season.
Smart went 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI hitting out of the cleanup spot. Brandon Shearer, Billy Wilson, and Spencer Erdman all finished with two hits, including a double apiece, with Shearer plating twice.
Jacob Steffens, who entered with two out in the second inning for Santa Clara, was ultimately charged with the loss after allowing five runs on nine hits and two walks over the final 6.1 innings of work. The right-hander struck out six, but fell to 2-4 with the decision.
Santa Clara jumped out to the early lead, scoring once in the first on a Jake Brodt RBI-single, but LMU drew even with a run in the second before scoring three in the third to claim a lead it would not relinquish. Erdman contributed the game-tying RBI-double in the second before a Smart RBI-double kick-started the scoring in the third. RBI-singles from Steven Chavez and Jimmy Hill capped the scoring in the third inning, as LMU led 4-1 after three.
The Lions would tack on two more in the fifth, highlighted by a Wilson RBI-double, to advance the lead to 6-1 headed to the sixth inning. The Broncos did manage to plate single runs in the sixth and eighth innings, but Harrison Simon eventually closed the door on the visitors, tossing the last 2.0 innings and allowing just the one run in the eighth on two hits and one walk while striking out a pair.
LMU will look to stay unbeaten in weekend series (6-0-1) this year when it sends right-hander Cory Abbott to the mound on Sunday at 1 p.m.
