Sarah Sponcil collected a match-best 13 kills and 12 digs while hitting .375 for a double-double as LMU women's volleyball (7-3) posted a 25-21, 25-23, 25-21 sweep over Dayton (11-1) on Friday night from the Flyer Classic being hosted by Dayton over the weekend.
In addition to Sponcil, LMU also received nine kills apiece from Sascha Dominique and Savannah Slattery. Dominique hit .467 over 15 attacks, helping guide LMU to a .266 team hitting percentage.
Senior Jamie Lea, who turned in six kills, also added five blocks, as the Lions finished the match with eight team blocks. LMU's serving game was also strong in the victory, as LMU recorded eight aces, including four in the final frame, with Kekai Whitford and Nicky Kevorken accounting for six of the eight.
Freshmen Jessie Prichard and Tess Reid once again split time setting the attack, registering 22 and 13 assists, respectively. Reid narrowly missed her sixth double-double of the year, teaming the assists with eight digs.
Amber Erhahon paced the Dayton attack with 11 kills, hitting .429 over 21 swings with just two errors. The Flyer block managed nine stuffs in the three sets, with Jamie Peterson and Kendyll Brown each collecting four.
Despite close first sets, LMU never trailed in either of the first two frames. The Lions hit .371 while allowing a .370 clip on the other side of the net in the first, but four kills apiece from Dominique, Slattery and Lea, teamed with three team blocks and two aces from Kevorken, guided the Lions to the opening set victory.
Both teams cooled off a bit offensively in the second, with LMU posting a slim .263-.250 advantage on the attack, but Sponcil came alive in the second, exploding for seven of her 13 kills in the period. Whitford served up a pair of aces, as LMU earned the hard-fought 25-23 victory.
The Lions had to play catch up in the third to earn the sweep, trailing 19-15 late in the set. LMU kept fighting down the stretch, clawing to within one at 19-18 on a Flyer attacking error that forced Dayton into its first time out. LMU would then win two of the next three points, including the final point on a Whitford ace, to even the tally at 20-20. Having completed the comeback, LMU kept the momentum to the finish, winning five of the final six points, including two on Sponcil kills, to capture the match.
LMU will return to action tomorrow morning when they play a neutral match against Southern Illinois at 7:30 a.m. PT.
