COLLEGE STATION, TX – The Lions wrapped up the Texas A&M Invitational on Saturday with a tough 3-0 loss to No. 14 Texas A&M.
The Lions came out swinging in the first set, grabbing the opening point on a
Maddie Boerstra kill and trading rallies early with big swings from
Sophie Stephenson and
Leah Burrell.
Nicole Schuetz and
Sophia Keene added timely attacks to keep things tight, but a run of service and hitting errors let the Aggies create some space. Boerstra landed another late kill to slow the push, but A&M closed it out, 25-18.
The second set started rough for LMU as A&M jumped to a 5-0 lead, forcing an early timeout. The Lions struggled to slow the Aggies offense but found a little rhythm midway through with back-to-back kills from Schuetz. Keene chipped in a couple late swings, but the gap was too wide and A&M took it 25-15.
The final frame was the tightest of the day. LMU struck first and stayed right with the Aggies behind kills from Stephenson and Schuetz. A&M edged ahead, but the Lions fought back after a timeout; Burrell and Schuetz teamed up for a big block and Burrell added a kill to tie it at 20. Boerstra and
Delfina Schuh delivered late points to keep it close at 22-24, but A&M closed the match on the next rally.
Keene paced LMU with six kills, while Schuh dished out 11 assists and
Kyla Firestone added nine. Boerstra also fired three aces to lead all players.
The Lions return home Thursday, Sept. 25, to host Seattle in their WCC opener at Gersten Pavilion.
