COLLEGE STATION, TX – The Lions battled it out and came away with a 3-2 win over the New Hampshire Wildcats on Thursday afternoon to kick off the Texas A&M Invitational at Reed Arena.
The Wildcats started strong in the opening set, jumping out to a quick lead, but LMU answered right back with a
Cecily Bramschreiber kill to even things up. The set stayed close until UNH pulled ahead late and held on for the 25-22 win.
Set two was a different story. The Wildcats opened with five straight points, but the Lions stormed back with a run sparked by
Isabella Ocampo. A big solo block from
Leah Burrell pushed LMU ahead, and even though UNH made things interesting with a late rally,
Maddie Boerstra finished it off with a kill, giving the Lions the 25-23 set win and evened the match, 1-1.
In the third, the Lions kept pace early with kills from
Zaria Thornton and
Sophie Stephenson, but UNH pulled away late to take it 25-20.
In set four, the Lions came out swinging and rattled off seven straight points to grab a 14-9 lead. UNH tried to chip away, but LMU stayed in control the whole way. Boerstra's kill put them at set point, and Stephenson finished it off to lock in the 25-18 win.
The final frame was a nail-biter, with ties all the way up to 14-14. Ocampo came through with a clutch kill, and an error from UNH sealed the 16-14 set win and 3-2 match win for the Lions.
Boerstra led the way with 22 kills and 26.5 points, while Bramschreiber dug up 32 balls to lead all players.
Delfina Schuh dished out 32 assists to pace the offense.
The Lions are back in action tomorrow at 1 p.m. against Southeastern Louisiana as tournament play continues.
