Dec. 22, 2016 After seven seasons at the helm of the LMU volleyball program, Tom Black has elected to leave LMU to become the seventh head coach at Georgia.
"The University of Georgia is getting a quality coach and person in Tom Black," LMU Athletic Director Bill Husak said. "He has transformed our program to expecting to be a West Coast Conference Champion and a NCAA tournament participant while also having the aspiration of becoming a national champion. We thank Tom for what he has accomplished at LMU, and we wish him and his family the very best."
Over seven seasons leading the Lions, Black posted a 127-86 overall record and guided LMU to three NCAA Tournament appearances, including the program's second NCAA Sweet-16 appearance in 2015. Black, who served as an assistant coach with the bronze-medal-winning USA Olympic team in Rio, saw his Lion athletes earn four AVCA All-American selections and six AVCA All-Region picks.
"Our current and future volleyball players deserve to have the very best coach we can attract to lead them," Husak stated. "Our tradition and recent success warrants an efficient search both in terms of thoroughness and timeliness. We want that special coach who has the same aspirations and beliefs that we possess for our student-athletes and their LMU Lions experience."
With the indoor season now complete, LMU will turn its attention to beach volleyball and the second year within the West Coast Conference structure.
