LOS ANGELES - Alvaro Madrigal found the back of the net for the second straight match, but the No. 19 LMU men's soccer team surrendered a pair of second half scores to No. 21 New Mexico Sunday afternoon, falling 2-1 to the Lobos at Sullivan Field.
The setback was the first of the season for LMU (5-1-0), which began the year with a program record five consecutive wins. New Mexico improved to 3-1-1 overall.
Madrigal got things going for the Lions for the second straight outing with his third goal of the season. The sophomore dribbled the ball through the Lobo defense on the right wing, cut in towards the goal and sent a shot far post, out of the reach of goalkeeper Jason Beaulieu.
The goal stood through the remainder of the half as the Lions took a 1-0 lead into the break. But the Lobos would finally break through at the 74-minute mark, knotting the score at 1-1 on a goal by Nicholas Rochowski. Chris Gurule set up the goal, sending in a low shot from the right side of the box. His attempt nicked off the far post and came back out to Rochowski who tapped it into the net.
Stealing the momentum, New Mexico took the lead just two minutes later on a Chris Wehan direct free kick from outside the top of the box. The goal was Wehan's sixth of the season.
LMU pushed forward furiously in the closing moments, including a bicycle kick attempt in the final minute from Greg Antognoli that went just wide, but could not find the equalizer.
The Lions head back out on the road next week, traveling to Albuquerque, N.M. to take part in the TLC Heating and Plumbing Invitational, hosted by New Mexico. LMU will face American on Friday, Sept. 18 and Missouri State on Sunday, Sept. 20.
