Uriostegui Nets First Collegiate Goal but Lions Come Up Short in Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. — LMU (0-1-1, 0-0-0) fell to UC Irvine (1-0-1, 0-0-0) with a final score of 3-1 on Monday at Anteater Stadium. The Lions managed to score once in the second half but were unable to overcome UC Irvine's three goals.

Matthew Sacristan found some space early on in the first half and put his laces through a long range effort. His dipping shot sent the keeper sprawling but went just wide of the net.

UC Irvine capitalized shortly thereafter, scoring off of a corner kick that led to an own goal from the Lions.

UC Irvine extended its lead with a second goal by Gage Lyons at 42:26, assisted by Brady Treinen and Marcus Lee. The first period concluded with UC Irvine leading 2-0.

In the second period, the Lions quickly reduced the deficit with a goal by Axel Uriostegui, assisted by Alexi Vagenas, at 46:34, bringing the score to 2-1. Vagenas took the ball down the right side of the pitch before firing a cross in that Uriostegui finished calmly into the side netting.

UC Irvine responded with a goal from Hunny Yoo, assisted by Gage Lyons and Brady Treinen, at 66:48 to extend its lead to 3-1. There was a lengthy review after offsides was called before the goal was given.
The Lions will travel to face SMU on Friday, Aug. 28, at 5 p.m. in Dallas, Texas.
