Feb. 3, 2015 Box Score
The LMU women's tennis team (1-3) traveled to #73 UC Irvine (3-1) on Tuesday, playing the ranked-opponent tough before eventually falling 4-3 at the UC Irvine Tennis Stadium. All three of LMU's team points came in singles play, as sophomore Jessica Perez, junior Kristine Kouyoumjian and freshman Anna Romeka recorded victories.
UC Irvine took the doubles point by way of wins on all three courts, but the Lions stormed back in singles play to make the match close. Romeka evened the match score with a victory on court five before Kat Facey defeated LMU's Ellie Grossman on court two to reclaim UCI's one-point lead.
Andrea Duva pushed the advantage to 3-1 with a victory over senior Lisa Piller on court six, but LMU still knew it had a chance at victory. Kouyoumjian was well on her way to victory on court four, and Perez, playing on court one, took the first set and was neck-and-neck in the second in the top position. With both of those points still to be determined but favoring the Lions, LMU needed a victory on court two where Arisha Ladhani and Andrea Crespo were paired against one another. Crespo dropped the first set, but was playing close in the second. Unfortunately for LMU, the junior could not record the victory, eventually falling 7-5 in the second as UC Irvine took the match.
Although the match had already been decided, LMU still had plenty to play for on the final two courts. Kouyoumjian finished off her opponent, Mazy Watrous, on court four to hand LMU its second point of the day, leaving only the top court left to be decided. Although Perez fell in a tie-breaking 7-6 second set, she rebounded nicely to win a 10-point tie-breaker in set three, cutting the eventual deficit to one point at 4-3.
LMU will now prepare to host #40 Long Beach State at home on Friday at the LMU Tennis Center. First serve is set for 1:30 p.m.
