LOS ANGELES -- Success: the accomplishment of an aim or purpose. Leadership: a process of social influence in which a person or persons can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task.
This past fall, the LMU women's soccer team turned in a season of play that has set a new benchmark for success for the Lion program. Records fell constantly as the year progressed, and by season's end, 2015 was undoubtedly the best in program history.
Turn to a coach, a member of the team or a fan, and they would all likely point to the nine-member senior class as the cornerstone to the team's success. Four of the nine began their careers in 2012 on a 9-8-2 squad that showed moments of greatest with a 1-1 draw at then No. 1 ranked UCLA and a late-season 3-0 upset of then 15th-ranked Pepperdine.
The following year left a bitter taste in their mouths as they struggled to a 3-16-1 mark. Then came a resurgence in 2014 with a winning record once again at 9-8-2. But that wasn't enough for this senior class.
"As our class has grown over the four years, we've been a huge presence, both as a physical presence and a leadership presence," said senior defender Cassidy Nicks. "That's really what changed this team. we set standards and improved those standards over the years and that's what's pushed us from a good team to a great team.
"This was our last shot," Nicks continued. "It was now or never. It was all in and we took the underclassmen on board and told them this is all we have so just come along with us."
And what a ride it was.
