Nov. 5, 2015 LOS ANGELES - Three games remain in the regular season, and this coming weekend the 14th-ranked LMU men's water polo team will host two of them with the top spot in the Western Water Polo Association on the line.
LMU enters the week at 10-10 overall and 4-1 in the WWPA, winning their last seven contests. The winning equalled the 2012 squad as the longest in program history. Redshirt junior Kirk Wilenius was named the KAP7 WWPA Player of the Week for Nov. 4 after leading the Lions to a pair of WWPA wins last week, earning 23 saves in a 13-11 win over California Baptist and a 14-8 win over Santa Clara.
The Lions will close out the regular season at home, starting with San Jose State on Friday, Nov. 6 at 3 pm. The Spartans are in their first year as a program and enter the game at 3-20 overall. Then on Saturday,
They then will take on 10th-ranked UC Davis on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 12 noon. The Aggies enter the week at 15-7 overall and 4-0 in the WWPA. The Aggies first travel to 16th-ranked UC San Diego on Thursday before heading to LMU.
Entering the week, UC Davis features the top-ranked offense (11.41 goals per game) and top-ranked defense (9.23 goals allowed per game) in the WWPA. LMU enters third in goals (11.05) and second in defense (10.40). Wilenius has taken over as the starter the last month of the season, helping the Lions to the seven-straight wins.
Saturday's game will feature the top two defenses in the league, and for good reason. Wilenius is the best in the league with a goals against average just under nine at 8.99. Just below him in second is UC Davis starter Spencer Creed at 9.05.
