Box Score 2 LOS ANGELES – LMU men's water polo played tough competition after advancing to the winner's bracket on Saturday and Sunday. The Lions proved that they could hang with the competition, playing a trio of close games against nationally ranked foes.
#3 California 15, #13 LMU 9
In a competitive matchup at the Spieker Aquatics Center, #3 California Golden Bears defeated #13 LMU Lions with a final score of 15-9 during the MPSF Invitational Winner's Bracket. California showcased a strong offensive performance, outscoring LMU in every period of the game.
The Golden Bears began the match with an explosive first quarter, netting four goals, including two from Kai Inoue, who finished the game with a total of four goals. Despite the strong start, LMU struggled to find the net early, remaining scoreless until the second quarter.
LMU found its rhythm in the latter stages of the game, scoring five goals in the third period, led by
Abel Romero Corbalan, who contributed two goals. However, California maintained a steady offensive pace, answering each LMU surge with goals of their own to keep a comfortable lead.
California's defense, anchored by goalie Aran Pina, who made 13 saves, proved crucial in slowing down LMU's scoring attempts. LMU's
Finn Friedland recorded six saves but faced a relentless offensive from the Golden Bears throughout the match.
As the game concluded, both teams showcased their talent, but California's early lead and consistent scoring were too much for LMU to overcome. This victory secures California's advancement in the tournament, adding to their impressive season performance.

In a thrilling match at the Spieker Aquatics Center during the 2025 MPSF Invitational, the #14 UC San Diego Tritons defeated the #13 LMU Lions with a score of 13-11. The game featured a strong start for UCSD, who established an early lead and maintained their momentum throughout.
The Tritons began the game with a flurry of goals, scoring four times in the first quarter. Eamon Hennessey led the charge for UCSD, netting four goals in the game, while teammates Bennett Axline and Landon Akerstrom contributed significantly to the scoreline.
LMU fought back valiantly, with
Tommaso Baldineti and
Abel Romero Corbalan each scoring three goals. Despite their efforts, LMU found themselves trailing after each quarter, unable to completely close the gap created by UCSD's early dominance.
As the game progressed into the fourth quarter, the Lions made a late surge, scoring four goals. However, UCSD's defense, led by goalie Alex Hegeman who made seven saves, held firm under pressure, allowing only two goals during that period.
Ultimately, the Tritons' strong start and consistent scoring throughout the match secured their victory, advancing them in the MPSF Invitational bracket. The Lions will look to regroup and improve in their upcoming matches as the tournament continues.
7th Place Game: #7 Long Beach State 12, #13 LMU 11
In a thrilling matchup at the Spieker Aquatics Center, the #13 LMU Lions narrowly lost to the #7 Long Beach State Beach with a final score of 12-11. The game showcased intense competition as both teams fought hard in this Overnight MPSF Invitational.
LMU displayed a strong offensive performance, led by
Alika Naone with three goals. Other key contributors included
Tommaso Baldineti and
Eduardo Carraresi, each scoring twice, along with
Richie Rimlinger,
Abel Romero Corbalan,
Nico Furneaux, and
Jaxon Hoover adding to the tally. Despite their efforts, LMU fell just short in the closing moments.
Long Beach State's offense was spearheaded by Gabi Acosta and Zalan Nagy, both netting three goals to lead their team. Marc Frigola also contributed with two goals. The Beach's ability to score five goals in the third period proved crucial in turning the tide of the match in their favor.
The game was a nail-biter, with both teams trading goals throughout the four quarters. LMU had a strong fourth period, scoring four goals, but it wasn't enough to overcome LBSU's relentless attack, which included three goals in the final quarter.
Goalkeeping was a highlight, with
Finn Friedland making eight saves for LMU and William Whitstone recording seven saves for LBSU. As the match concluded, it was evident that both teams gave their all, but Long Beach State emerged victorious, continuing their strong season.
