LOS ANGELES – #1 UCLA showed their strength despite a strong showing from #12 LMU fighting for four quarters on Saturday. The top-ranked Bruins defeated LMU, 22-10, at Burns Aquatics Center.
UCLA took an early 2-0 lead before
Nico Furneaux put the Lions on the board and cut the lead in half. The two sides traded off the next four goals as
Roman Saroyan and
Alika Naone each responded to a UCLA goal to keep the Lions within one at 3-2 and then 4-3. The Bruins added one in the final minute of the quarter to take a 5-3 advantage after one.
The Bruins added two goals to start the second quarter before
Nick Leung put an end to the scoring run. UCLA scored three of the final four goals of the half, with
Tommaso Baldineti's powerplay goal with 15 seconds to play accounting for the last score for the Lions before intermission.
LMU's biggest offensive outburst came in the third quarter, with LMU scoring four goals in the period. Naone scored twice on a 6-on-5 and Baldineti scored on a penalty shot and at even strength.
Naone scored his fourth goal of the game to lead the team in the fourth quarter.
Roberto Barerra Sanchez played just over 24 minutes in the cage and
Finn Friedland played the other seven plus minutes as LMU's goalkeeper.
The Lions open conference play on Friday, Oct. 3 with a trip up to San Jose State.
