MORAGA, Calif. - Returning to West Coast Conference play after a two-week hiatus, the LMU men's soccer team came out strong at Saint Mary's Friday, taking a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute. But the Gaels would respond with two unanswered goals, sending the Lions to a 2-1 setback at Saint Mary's Stadium.
The Lions drop to 7-8-0 overall and 2-2-0 in WCC play while Saint Mary's improves to 6-8-1 overall and 3-1-0 in league contests.
Senior John McFarlin put LMU on the board at the 11:30 mark of the match off a counter attack by the Lions. Quickly working the ball up the field, Alvaro Madrigal found himself just outside the 18-yard box. With no space to play the ball forward, he sent a ball back to Leon Prikhodovskiy. The senior midfielder then one-touched a pass to McFarlin, who was making a run up the field to Prikhodovskiy's right.
Taking a touch from his right to his left foot just inside the 18, McFarlin then punched a high arcing shot into the upper left netting. The goal was McFarlin's first of the season and seventh of his career.
Momentum would sway towards the Gaels as the half closed however. With just two minute until the break, Cole Souza was whistled for taking down SMC's Evan Martinez inside the box. Jose Navarro made good on the ensuing penalty kick, beating LMU's Paul Blanchette with a low shot to Blanchette's left.
Ever De La Torre came up with the game-winner in the 85th minute for Saint Mary's. Will Kendall earned the assist on the goal, settling a long ball into the box and dishing it off to an onrushing De La Torre.
LMU earned a slight 16-14 shot advantage in the match. Blanchett finished the day with five saves while the Gaels Lucas Champenois made four saves.
The Lions continue the WCC roadswing on Sunday, facing Pacific at noon in Stockton.
