SACRAMENTO - A trio of Lions scored first-half goals as the LMU men's soccer team wrapped up its season-opening, four-match road swing with a convincing 3-0 shutout of Sacramento State Sunday afternoon.
The first win of the young season moved the Lions to 1-1-2 while the Hornets fell to 0-2-1.
Griffin Bell got things going early, scoring his first collegiate goal just 4:47 into play. The Lions forced a Hornet turnover and immediately countered, making a pair of swift passes before the ball would end up at Bell's feet for a 10-yard strike into the back of the net. Adrien Perez and Sebastian De Rada were the setup men on the play.
Perez, who has two goals on the season, attempted to make it 2-0 just two minutes later, but his shot was saved by Sacramento State goalkeeper Philip Bru.
The Lions would find that second goal in the 35th minute as Alvaro Madrigal and David Flores worked the ball inside the area to de Rada who pushed a shot into the corner netting.
Four minutes later, and less than three minute after subbing in tot he match, Grant Sampson made it 3-0 Lions with his first collegiate goal. Madrigal picked up his second assist of the day while Bryce Bacic was also credited with an assist on the goal.
LMU finished with a 12-8 shot advantage, including a 7-2 edge in the first half. Five of the Lions' 12 shots were on frame while LMU goalkeeper Vince Paldino made two saves on the Hornets' two second-half shots on goal.
The Lions return to Sullivan Field this week, for their 2014 home opener against Colgate on Sunday, Sept. 14. Kick off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
