LOS ANGELES - LMU women's soccer has been named an National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) College Team Academic Award Honoree while Jenni Benger and Cassidy Nicks were honored by the association for their individual academic performances.
Benger, a redshirt senior this past fall for the Lions, was named to the 2014 NSCAA Women's University Division Scholar All-West Region Third Team and Nicks, a junior, was an Honorable Mention selection.
This marks the third straight NSCAA All-West Region honor for Benger, who was an honorable mention selection in both 2012 and 2013. The redshirt senior defender was named to the third team this year, carrying a 3.63 cumulative GPA while concluding her degree in health and human services. Nicks, a marketing major with a 3.33 cumulative GPA, earns her first NSCAA academic honor.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) throughout his or her career; start more than 50 percent of all games and be a significant contributor to the team; be nominated by an institution that is a current NSCAA College Services member; be a junior or above in academic standing at the current institution; be in his or her second year at the current school if he or she is a transfer student; and submit the Junior or Senior College Scholar All-America GPA Certification and Signature Release Form.
The LMU program as a whole was included among a total of 886 soccer teams (288 men, 598 women) posting a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher, thereby earning the NSCAA Team Academic Award for the 2013-14 academic year. The Lions combined for a 3.19 team GPA during the 2013-14 academic year.
Note: This award runs one academic year behind. This season's (2014-15) winners will be announced next fall.
