LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Swimming in a home dual meet for the second time in as many days, the LMU swim team (1-1 in duals) bested visiting San Diego, 143-118, on Sunday at LMU's Burns Aquatic Center. The Lions won eight of the 14 events in a meet that was video streamed live on LMULions.com.
Senior Kjirsten Magnuson had a solid all-around meet for the Lions, registering a pair of individual victories and contributing the lead leg in LMU's winning 200 medley relay to open the meet. Magnuson teamed with Mary Kate Reid, Lise Soule and Kristen Brennand to win the 200 medley, stopping the clock in 1:47.19 to lead LMU to a 1-2 finish in the race. The Coeur d'Alene, Idaho product then won the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.56 and the 50 freestyle in 24.21. The Lions also placed a swimmer in third in the 50 sprint, as Kathleen Gore raced to a time of 24.92. Magnuson finished her solid day with a second-place finish in the 100 freestyle, turning in a time of 52.93 to help LMU to a 2-3-4 finish in the points. Hannah Calton (53.69) and Brennand (54.91) finished in third and fourth, respectively.
In addition to her third-place finish in the 100 freestyle, Calton earned valuable points for the Lions over the course of the meet. The Granite Bay, Calif. native took first in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:05.27, finishing just in front of teammate Lise Soule at 2:06.41 in second. Soule, whose 200 butterfly time was a personal-best and pushed her into fifth all-time at LMU, exacted her revenge on Calton in the 100 butterfly, winning the race in 56.59 and leaving Calton in second at 57.42. Soule's time was a new personal-best and ranks third all-time at LMU for the 100 butterfly distance.
Junior Kristen Clarno also took home a pair of top finishes on Sunday, winning the 200 backstroke (2:07.14) and 200 individual medley (2:10.40). Sophomore Kailee Mora finished second behind Clarno in the 200 IM, registering a mark of 2:12.13, while Stacy Maier took third in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:09.11.
LMU's final first-place finish was recorded by Mary Kate Reid, as she guided LMU to first and third-place finishes in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:07.07. Hallie Hengels took third at 1:09.69, narrowly edging the fourth-place finisher (Sammi Cohn) from San Diego for three points. Reid, a local product from Los Angeles, also finished second in the 200 breaststroke, collecting a personal-best time of 2:25.77 to move into ninth on LMU's all-time record list.
The Lions will return to action on November 20 when they swim at the Arena Invite. LMU will return home on January 10 when it hosts a double-dual meet against Cal State Bakersfield and UC San Diego at 11 a.m.
