SPOKANE, Wash. - Yet another solid defensive effort was turned in by the LMU men's soccer team Sunday afternoon at Gonzaga, but the Lion offense was unable to capitalize in a second straight scoreless draw.
The shutout was the eighth of the year for LMU and the third for goalkeeper Paul Blanchette, who collected nine saves in the 110-minute match. The Lions, who are now 7-4-5 overall and 1-1-2 in West Coast Conference play, have now gone without a goal for nearly 313 minutes.
Adrien Perez had five shots to lead the Lions, but just four of LMU's 17 total shots were on frame.
The Lions had opportunities from the kick off as they spend much of the first half in the Zags' end. At 11:23, Jack McCracken connected on a corner kick cross from Sebastian De Rada, but the shot nicked just wide off the side post. Greg Antognoli was there for the rebound, but his attempt was wide of the goalmouth.
The two teams' shot counts were near identical for the balance of the match. After Gonzaga held a 7-6 advantage in the first frame, each team had five shots in the second half, four in the first overtime and two apiece in the final period. LMU had a 9-4 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
Three matches remain on the 2014 regular-season slate, beginning Friday, Nov. 7 against San Francisco. Kick off at Sullivan Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.
