SAN FRANCISCO - Battling an onslaught of shots by San Francisco in a highly physical match, the LMU men's soccer team closed out the weekend with a 3-1 victory over the Dons Sunday afternoon at Negoesco Stadium.
The Lions moved to 4-3-3 on the season while San Francisco drops to 6-2-1 overall.
Grant Sampson put the Lions on the board in the 21st minute, heading in a corner kick cross whipped into the box by Jack McCracken.
Craig Nitti made it 2-0 LMU in the early goings of the second half, scoring on a free kick opportunity from 25 yards out. The redshirt senior defender sent a long ball into the top right corner of the net for his third goal in as many games.
USF cut the spread in half in the 59th minute when Bryce Kaminski scored on a diving header off a free kick by Davi Ramos, making it 2-1 LMU. But Adrien Perez put the match away in the closing moments, scoring his team-leading fourth goal of the season with four seconds remaining.
LMU withstood 24 shots from the Dons, including 15 in the second half as the home team looked to get back into the match. Vince Paldino finished with 10 saves in is fifth start and third win of the season.
The match featured seven total yellow cards, including three given to the Lions. LMU was whistled for a total of 20 fouls to the Dons' seven.
The Lions head back out on the road next week, traveling to face San Diego on Friday, Oct., 14. They return to Sullivan Field to begin a three-match homestand on Tuesday, Oct. 14 against UC Santa Barbara.
