PORTLAND - A fabulous defensive effort by both the Lions and Pilots thwarted a combined 27 shots and 24 corner kicks in a scoreless double-overtime draw for the LMU men's soccer team Friday night at Portland's Merlo Field.
The shutout was the seventh of the season for LMU and fifth for Friday's starting goalkeeper Vince Paldino, who made four big saves in the match. Paldino has allowed just four goals in eight matches (740 total minutes) for a WCC low 0.49 GAA.
The Lions picked up one point with the draw and move to 7-4-4 overall and 1-1-1 in WCC play. Portland is now 4-7-4 overall and 0-2-1 in league matches.
Portland got off the first three shots of the night, including one by Eddie Sanchez that resulted in Paldino's first save of the match. The Lions would build momentum through the middle of the period, as LMU would go into the break with a 6-4 shot advantage, including two by Sebastian De Rada.
Early in the second half, De Rada had a pair of shots turned away by Pilot goalkeeper Eric Christiansen as defense continued to reign.
Adrien Perez had one of the Lions' best chances midway through the first overtime period, but his low, left-footed shot went just wide of the left post, grazing the outside netting. The sophomore finished with three of LMU's 12 shots while De Rada led the way with six, including five on frame.
LMU is back in action on Sunday at noon, looking for three points at Gonzaga, which suffered a 2-0 setback to San Diego on Friday.
