LOS ANGELES - Playing their third match in a six-day span, the LMU men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Saint Mary's in West Coast Conference action Sunday afternoon.
The Lions, who had been unbeaten in six straight, move to 7-4-3 overall and 1-1-0 in WCC play. Saint Mary's improves to 8-4-2 overall and 1-1-0 in league play.
A sluggish and disorganized start in the back led to an early own goal by the Lions, giving Saint Mary's a 1-0 advantage. Just 3:31 into the match, the Gaels' Michael Semenza sent a low cross into the box from the right flank that knocked off an LMU defender and redirected into the Lions' net.
The Gaels made it 2-0 in the 34th minute when Max Mirner won a ball near the midfield and sent a long through pass up the center of the field to a streaking Carlo Eikani. Eikani controlled the ball with a touch and was able to beat LMU goalkeeper Paul Blanchette with a hard strike into the left post netting.
The Lions came out of the gates in the second half with energy and a more organized and purposeful attack, finishing the frame with an 11-2 shot advantage over the Gaels. But goalkeeper Andre Rawls came up with four big saves and LMU was unable to break through.
Affer going 2-1 in this six-day span, LMU will take a much needed 12-day break from action, returning to the pitch, and WCC play, on Oct. 31 at Portland.
